The map above summarises 6 months
(January to June 1998) of satellite data on sea-surfaces from the National Oceanographic
and Atmospheric Administration in the USA. The 'hotspots' in 'warm' colours show average
temperatures of 1°C above the normal maximum found there for those months. The warmest
waters (red) were in the far East Pacific, with warm water around the Great Barrier Reef
and in the Indian Ocean. Such warm temperatures are often followed by coral bleaching like
that shown on the front cover. Some corals on John Brewer Reef, Great Barrier Reef,
bleached (white), whereas others still have their normal colours (mauve, brown and pink).
