The Australian Institute of Marine Science
(AIMS) was established in 1972
and has its headquarters on a 207 hectare site at Cape Ferguson, east of Townsville in North Queensland, (nearly 50km by road).
Townsville, the administrative
centre of North Queensland, with a district population
of more than 150,000 is the largest city in tropical
Australia and a major import/export centre for northern Australia.
Access is by
appointment only or escorted
tours.
General office hours are between 8:00 am and
4:40 pm Monday
to Friday
How to get
there
Travelling from Townsville
on the south-bound Bruce Hwy, the turn-off to AIMS is on the left
where the highway and the railway meet the salt-pans, approximately 32
km from the Townsville CBD. Turn left off the highway, cross the
railway line and continue in a northerly direction for a further 16km
to where the Institute is located at Cape Ferguson.
There is no public transport
to the Institute.
