The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) was established in 1972 and has its headquarters on a 207 hectare site at Cape Ferguson, east of Townsville in North Queensland, (nearly 50km by road).

Townsville, the administrative centre of North Queensland, with a district population of more than 150,000 is the largest city in tropical Australia and a major import/export centre for northern Australia.

Access is by appointment only or escorted tours.

General office hours are between 8:00 am and 4:40 pm Monday to Friday

How to get there

Travelling from Townsville on the south-bound Bruce Hwy, the turn-off to AIMS is on the left where the highway and the railway meet the salt-pans, approximately 32 km from the Townsville CBD. Turn left off the highway, cross the railway line and continue in a northerly direction for a further 16km to where the Institute is located at Cape Ferguson.

There is no public transport to the Institute.
